Ditch the Next Button

What is this Next button you speak of? I don’t think I’ve built a course in over a year that had one. Think outside the navigation woes. DESIGN the flow of instruction and you’ll be amazed at how awful you relied on that button.

- Kevin Thorn (@LearnNuggets)

Great quote from Kevin on the use of the Next button in elearning. Think outside the box, people. There’s more out there than “click next to continue.”

Cubs Go With Quade as Manager

What’s next for Sandberg? No one knows. But we do know he has no future with the Cubs. And that’s a shame.

I’m bummed. I wanted Sandberg or Girardi. I’m glad it’s not Torre, but I hope Sandberg gets another shot with the Cubbies, or that Quade is a pleasant surprise.

The Future of Learning: Smarter, Simple, Social

The current learning and development trainer becomes pivotal in facilitating the establishment of network contacts, and empowering individuals to identify and customise their personal knowledge business processes to best support their knowledge and learning needs in the current complex workplace environments.

Empowering individuals… Do it.

Remove Flash from Safari Without Click2Flash – Very nice. Done.

YouTube HTML5 Safari Extension – Awesome

Distraction Crutches

I didn’t need to have any software blocking any website, I didn’t have to disconnect from the Internet, and so on. I finished my work on time, and I ended up feeling less tired than I thought. But most of all, I felt focussed and in control.

Good points. I like WriteRoom for its simplicity, but I don’t need it to write. I’ve had issues getting work done with Tweetie, Skype, Reader, etc. open. Growl is awesome, but can be a huge distraction. I shut down the app, switch to a new space, and get to work.

The Org Chart is not the Org

A Phone to Save Us From Our Phones – WTF? If I wanted that, I’d just go back to an old Razr. In typical Microsoft fashion, they’re advertising message is weird and off the mark, unless their goal was to keep people from buying their phones.

Oh, and no copy/paste on launch. To quote their own commercial, “really?”

Learn Math on Your Regular (non-iOS, non-Microsoft) Phone – Very cool. (via HybridKris)

The ‘Back to the Future’ That Might Have Been – I had no idea. Very interesting. Goes well with this “making of” for the Goonies.

Minimalism by Example – I’ve had issues with Web Design Ledger before. They’re out to make a buck. While it seems to have worked for them, I do not like their methods.

Being Geek Book Trailer – Awesome. And ordered.

We Know More – good stuff on modern knowledge management

Giving Back 2010: Blog Action Day for Water

So it’s Blog Action Day, 2010. I had been planning a longer post than this, and I still hope to finish it later tonight, but I wanted to get something up before the day was over.

Look, there are a lot of reasons to give back to society. A lot of us do, a lot of us don’t. It’s a personal choice. Here’s my pitch for giving back:

Consider how lucky you are. If you’re even reading this post, you’re so lucky it’s ridiculous. You have power. You have the internet. You have a smart phone, an iPad or a computer. That alone puts you at a great advantage over the majority of the people on this planet. Most of you have a job that pays you more than $5 per day.

You’re lucky.

Consider the magnitude of this. You have an incredible opportunity to do good. To be good. To help someone that is not as fortunate as you. It’s simple. Donate $1. Donate $100. Volunteer. Write a blog post about a charity. Share this link on Facebook or Twitter. It doesn’t matter. It’s simple.

Give back.

If you’d like to give back, and want to join in the official charity for Blog Action Day, use the widget below. Otherwise, check out Charity Water, Village Learning and Achievement Center, or Serve.
