LMS providers definitely have Web 2.0 on the brain. Social networking is in their plans.
Bersin will be publishing Learning 2.0 study in Q1 of 2009. Best practices, etc. Biggest challenge today is overwhelming volume of information. How do we make sure we’re getting them the right information (that is valid) at the right time?
Context and Standards - two things that the industry needs.
New goal for T&D is to enable Learning 2.0. Enable the workforce and the knowledge workers to do more.
Directions of the LMS Market:
- Increase in Enterprise Learning Capabilities, including L2.0
- Increase in Talent Management Capabilities
Most recent activity (in development and purchasing) is in Performance Management (integration with LMS), including development plans, goals, etc.
Vendors:
- LMS Training Administration is moving to Talent Management
- LCMS is moving to On-Demand
Buyers:
- Only 60% of those surveyed (850 companies) have an LMS - interesting number.
- Tracking and reporting the biggest function needed from an LMS.
- Reducing training costs is very low on the listed benefits (6%!)
- Biggest challenge is customization and content integration.
- Current LMSs do not provide the information the user needs (60+% said it was poor or fair)
- LMS consolidation or replacement is in the plans for the majority.
Learning Portals:
- IBM Learning On-Demand (I need to look more into this)
- Personalization (What I need, right now; what skills/competencies do I need)
- Search (IBM returns info, courses, and experts to contact - very cool)
- Web 2.0 Social Platforms (companies selling canned networks and softwares to companies)
Alternatively, could you just open up to existing networks (Facebook, Twitter, Yammer) but have guidelines and lockdown?
Four Cs of Social Software:
- Conversations
- Content
- Connections
- Collaboration
Companies using social software mainly for succession planning and onboarding.
Why not combine the two, gain succession planning by using the experienced workers to mentor the new workers and capture the information shared.
What I want:
A knowledge portal containing instant info, knowledge gathering and publishing, good search that brings it all together, tied to elearning, instructor-led training, virtual training (webinars) and documentation, and an AIR app to launch it from desktops and distribute with alerts, reminders, etc.
Final Notes:
Attending this following Dan Roam’s speech on using pictures was painful. Boring, text-filled slides with bar charts we can’t read. Different types of charts and color schemes, so no continuity. And yikes, some of the colors they used were not projector-friendly. Think people, think! I need to do a session next year on how to present at DevLearn. I think I made that comment last year…hmmm.
DevLearn Keynote: Dan Roam (Back of the Napkin)
Tom O’Reilly yesterday, Dan Roam today. It’s almost worth attending DevLearn just for the keynote speakers (especially after last year: Sir Ken Robinson, Medici Effect)
Notes from Dan Roam:
“I was invited to talk to the U.S. Senate. I have no idea what they do.”
Simply proposition: we can solve our problems with pictures. That’s it. Simple pictures. Stick figures, shapes, arrows, smileys.
What if you’re not a visual person? Don’t worry. This will be basic enough for you, too!
Use basic mapping, visuals to really stimulate our brain to see more, create more. Generating ideas from lists will not stimulate as much as pictures will. Communicating to teams is easier with pictures.
Simple technologies to share information. In distributed learning, visuals help because you can’t always see the people you’re teaching to.
Unwritten rule of visual thinking:
1. Whoever best describes the problem, is the person who is most likely to solve it.
How to draw a napkin picture:
Southwest Airlines, started as an idea to fly between Dallas/Houston/San Antonio, started on a napkin. One triangle between three cities. Very simple, very cool.
Roam is going over political napkin sketches…good stuff. Obama is a visual thinker. No surprise there.
Three kinds of people in whiteboard meetings: black pen, yellow pen (highlighter), red pen (not participating, but is critical) — ALL THREE NEED TO PARTICIPATE FOR BEST RESULTS.
In order to get the red pen person up there, piss them off!
Good point about presentations, PowerPoint, etc. I’m reminded of Guy Kawasaki’s Art of the Start, and the note about PowerPoint rule - font size, number of slides, etc.
Napkin sketch to replace the Elevator pitch. Simple picture to explain it. (Learning Ninjas, Duce Enterprises, etc.)
How to create an eNapkin (great concept) - how do we do this virtually, if we can’t meet in person? Whiteboard tools in WebEx, etc? Use PowerPoint with drawing tools. Some people know about it, some don’t, but few actually use it.
1. Draw a circle and give it a name, to get past the “where to start” issue.
2. Draw a circle in the middle, label it “my problem”
3. Define the who, what, when, where, how and why.
Roam mentions simplicity several times, noting Microsoft Word being to bulky, especially when most people just want to write something. This is why I favor Coda and CSS Edit in lieu of Dreamweaver. It’s why I like Fireworks, not Photoshop.
Nice note about our tendency to look for technology to generate ideas or brainstorm, instead of just grabbing a pen and paper or a whiteboard. This is why I love my Moleskine and Coudal Field Notes. Perfect for quick, visual thinking. Now, if I could just figure out a way to get my paper notes and ideas synced with my technology.
Vision is both a parallel and serial process. Interesting. (this is research-based).
Dan is using Red and Green to draw on the screen. I wonder if these presenters ever think about the color-blind. I notice the use of red and green a LOT in conferences and training sessions.
You have to show the right picture to the right audience….simple to complex, or complex to simple, depending on who you’re talking to and what the goal is (neurosurgeons vs. music students)
Any problem is a big layer cake. There are more flavors inside than anybody expects.

Looking Back…a history of learning tools
Right now, we’re in Rapid eLearning Era.
- PPT to Flash, etc.
- Giving anyone tools to share content.
- Articulate, Captivate, Raptivity, etc.
Before Rapid eLearning, it was the WBT era.
- Online page-turners. We’re all guilty!
- Dreamweaver (Coursebuilder, yikes!), Flash, Notepad
Before WBT, was CBT era.
- Similar to WBT
- Page-turner, delivered via CD
- Authorware, Toolbook
** CBT and WBT were basically identical, delivery medium was just different (CD vs. Web)
Before CBT, was Green Screen era.
- Mainframes.
- Software training
- Sandbox for learner developed by programmers.
Where are we going now?
1: Personalization
Authoring:
- Tools will adapt to developer’s skill level and provide incremental levels of support.
- They will look at your past and adapt to your current needs.
Learner:
- Allow learners to filter out the info they don’t need, and allow them to reference the info they do need. (search)
- System (LMS, ITMS) will adapt to learner, assigning content automatically based on competencies, job function, etc. (User Profile)
- Prescriptive learning: without a robust profile, pre-assessments are time-consuming, and fairly unsuccessful. Accuracy of prescription is based on quality and depth of pre-assessment.
2: Interface
- We’re in the midst of an interface revolution (iPhone, Wii, etc.) - referenced Minority Report.
- Interface with tools via webcam and hand gestures - very cool. I wonder what this will mean for the learner. Physical interactions?
3: Tools and Integration
- Most people in the room use four or more tools - crazy. Hope the vendors are paying attention!
- Balance of control and speed when integrating tools.
My 2 Cents: Personally, I’d rather have 6 tools that each do one or two things very well, and aren’t bulky, than having one tool that is only decent at audio editing, only marginal at graphics, etc. (see Articulate). For some, all-in-one tools will work for basic rapid development, but are not perfect for everyone. I see two fields. The all-in-ones, and the smaller apps that do one thing really well.
4: What about content development
- Most people think they do some things well, but others not so well.
- Plug for Ruth Clark - very valid one. eLearning and the Science of Instruction…READ IT!
5: Reuse
- Definitely need to do this.
- eLearning Mashups
- Reusable content items
- Comments from SMEs, Users, Stakeholders - capture it all. (like Captivate 4)
- Distribute across multiple mediums - online, mobile, etc.
**Faster, Better, Cheaper. - We’ve gotten faster and cheaper, but not necessarily better.
My notes:
- Frank is a wonderful presenter. Very good with the crowd, just enough humor, but really good content.
- I love this industry and being part of its growth.
Publishing to a Single SWF from Captivate
If you perform full motion capture in Captivate (happens automatically when you drag your mouse), it will create multiple SWF files in your project directory. A work around I learned yesterday from RJ is below:
- Record your Captivate movie as you normally would, including drag and drop.
- Publish your Captivate movie as SWF output (this publishes the main movie plus individual full motion SWFs)

- In Captivate, go to the Full Motion slides and delete the full motion screen, then insert an animation and navigate to and select your full motion swf to insert.


- Repeat step 3 for all full motion slides
- Publish your Captivate movie to SWF output. (optionally, you can also turn off the skin when you publish - I created a “no-skin” skin)

- In your published folder, you can now delete the full motion swfs and the skin swf if you want. Your published SWF will contain the full motion swfs you inserted as animations with no loss of quality.
